Wedding of George Tomsett and Ann NewmanOn 14th January 1899 the wedding of my great-grandparents, George Tomsett and Ann Newman, took place at Slaugham church.
The photograph was taken presumably outside the building where the reception took place. At first glance it seems to be the Old School, which by 1899 was used solely as a village hall, but the windows and roof are different to those depicted in old photographs of the school. Please can anyone name the location, or anyone else in the picture. Also, what is the pipe and equipment in the lower right corner?
Ann Tomsett can be seen standing outside her home in picture #526.
Both groom and bride were born in 1876. Ann died in 1932, but George lasted until 1976, dismissed just short of his century!

The chap on the right looks as though he has taken a short cut to the wedding across a field or two.

Location solved! I have now found a document that states that the photograph was taken "outside a huge barn at Brantridge Forest Farm." The farm is located along Balcombe Lane, Handcross about 400 yards past High Beeches on the left. According to the 1901 and 1911 censuses the Newman family were living on the farm, which perhaps suggests that the photograph was taken before the wedding. Hence the veil is in place.

I also have been told that the wedding photo was taken at the back of the stables at Forest Farm opposite the water tower.

The sun shining on them suggests that they are sitting against a wall which could be (1) a rear extension to The Old White Horse, or (2) an earlier vestry extension of the Church.
The contraption and pipe might be the bellows for the church organ.
Unlikely though to get January sunshine.
