Cycling AA Patrolman from Handcross

My grandfather, Frederick "Bob" Stoner, lived in Nashlands Cottages, Handcross and had many jobs in life but one of the most unusual was that as a AA patrolman on a bicycle! He patrolled the Brighton Road from Handcross to Sayers Common and, as he was unable to offer much in the way of roadside repairs, he had to cycle to a telephone and call out garage mechanics from Cuckfield.
This newspaper cutting from the Mid-Sussex Times celebrates the 60th anniversary of the AA and features my grandfather.

Comments:
I have just found your website and the story of AA man, Frederick Stoner.
I worked for the AA in Leicester and in 1961 was in the Patrol's Pay Dept. By then patrols were on motorcycle and sidecars!
My great-great-grandparents are buried in Cowfold- They were James and Ann STONER. What a coincidence !
