Barry Ray Year: 1950 Villages: HandcrossBill and Bert Robinson (1 of 2)
There are no details attached to this picture except that it shows Bill Robinson, his wife, and Peggy Burrell. Why they are dressed up in quite this manner I can only speculate. I cannot recall Bill’s wife and so cannot identify her.
The Large Version shows a close up.
Brothers Bill and Bert Robinson came to Handcross from Whiteman’s Green in the 1920s to set up a business in Dudley House, the site of the current hardware shop. Bill ran the ironmongery side of the shop, and Bert the jewelry and watch and clock maker side.
They both joined the choir at Slaugham church, and both played in the village brass band.
Bert died in 1957 aged just 64, and Bill left Dudley House in 1962 to take over the confectionery and tobacconists shop opposite.
Bill died in 1968 aged 79.
The two brothers married two Stephens sisters, May and Eva.
Select Open Document to view a rather grisly picture of Walter Albert “Bert” Robinson (1892-1957). I decided to decline the challenge of making him look human!
