Barry Ray Year: 1950 Villages: HandcrossBritish Legion fete in Handcross (6 of 14)
Here are three pohotographs showing the opening ceremony of the British Legion Fete held in the Recreation Ground in Handcross on 1st July 1950.
A video of the fete can be found at picture #1814.
The then sports pavilion was duly decorated to greet the honoured guests. On the left is the Legion’s President, Ralph Tulley (1897-1972), who is inviting Major General, Earl of Athlone to declare the fete open.
Centre stage is HRH Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (1883-1981), the longest-living grandchild of Queen Victoria.
On the right is Col. J. Raymond Warren (1888-1956) of the Hyde who inspected the assembled ranks of ex-servicemen of both World Wars with the Earl. Mrs Eveline Warren is hidden behind Prineess Alice, but can be glimpsed wearing a white hat in two of the photographs.
The Large Version shows the Earl of Athlone opening the fete.
