The Slaugham Archive
Fingerpost at Coos Lane, Handcross restoredThe fingerpost at the top of Coos Lane at its junction with the Horsham Road in Handcross had been fulfilling its duty since probably the middle of the last century when it replaced another post going back to the stagecoach days and horses and carts.
However, by August 2013 when Street View captured it on Google Earth it was decidedly showing signs of old age. The Large Version shows the wear and tear and drooping arms.
Quite soon after the Street View photograph was taken the long “Haywards Heath” arm fell off and disappeared!
John Welch, Chairman of Slaugham Parish Council said “This is in a very sad state and WSCC have abdicated their responsibility, so it’s down to us”. John and a small group of helpers have now restored the sign back to its former glory as shown in the picture above.
