Staplefield criicket century-makers (1 of 2)

Scoring centuries at village level were quite rare and the batsman was usual photographed standing beside the scoreboard if someone could produce a camera.
I can find just three such pictures of successful Staplefield batsmen. The picture above shows David Mordaunt who succeeded in scoring 129, out of the team total of 166. Usually, he did he did not bother to play himself in; his first ball usually ended up over the boundary ropes! He played several times for the M.C.C. against more minor countries in world cricket.
The Large Version shows Alan Pattenden from Handcross who scored 110 out of the team score of 163.
Select Open Document to view two newspaper cuttings reporting, firstly, on an occasion when in a charity match in 1959 Staplefield refused to continue playing. The second report covers the club’s 1958 annual meeting.
