Arthur Brown and Rolls Royce at Hyde, Handcross

The photograph shows my uncle, a young Arthur Brown, probably taken just after cleaning one of the two Rolls Royce cars on the Hyde estate. Within a few years of this photograph he married Hepsy Doggett from the village.
The Large Version shows another Rolls Royce from the Hyde garage.
Select Open Document to view three cars parked in the garage on the Hyde estate.
The car on the right of the Rolls Royces seems to have Austin Six on the radiator and it is probably an Austin Twelve-Six from the 1930s with a straight 6-cylinder engine.
Also included is another photograph of Arthur Brown, this time with the cook at the Hyde using a Rolls Royce as a garden bench! It seems that the cook has just enjoyed a radio-active breakfast, but perhaps it was simply Ready Brek!

It is my opinion that the photograph of the gentleman with the Rolls Royce is Sydney Fenn who worked as a chauffeur at the Hyde during the 1930s and is my cousin.
The gentleman with the cook is another person, probably Arthur Brown.

Jean, I contacted Linda who has spoken with her 95-year-old father, Peter Brown, a younger brother of Arthur Brown, and she has now replied as follows.

“I have spoken to my father about the photograph of the man next to the Hyde car and, although this will be a disappointment to Jean, my father has confirmed that this is most definitely Arthur Brown.
He remembers the Hyde chauffeur, Sydney Fenn, and says he was older than Arthur (Sydney b. 1904, Arthur b. 1913). Arthur was the valet whose job was to clean all the estate cars; my father says the chauffeur never cleaned the vehicles as this was a job felt beneath his station!
I have attached another couple of images of Arthur in his work overalls, with all the additional information it confirms these images are of Arthur Brown. The photographs all come from my grandmother’s collection.
I hope Jean will not be too disappointed.”

The other two photographs of Arthur and Sally the dog are somewhat lacking in clarity, but as they are useful in the context of identification I have uploaded them. They can be viewed by selecting Open Document.

Barry, many thanks for taking the trouble to find out the information about the photograph. I am disappointed but facts are facts.
It is still very good to have photos of cars which Sydney may have driven.
I am investigating whether Sydney's wife, Diana Fenn (née Constable), is still living? I did find her in the photograph for the Hyde reunion (picture #946).

Jean, Diana Fenn was born in 1907 and married Sydney in 1931. Diana passed away in 1999, aged 91.
Their daughter, Judith, was born in 1933. A search for her name will find her in three photographs on the website.

Barry, many thanks. I should have realized that Diana had passed. She attended my wedding in St Marys Church, Balcombe in 1963.
I am also cousin to Basil Wilkinson of whom I have also found pictures on the website. He and his parents also attended my wedding. How the years roll by!
My maiden name is Hill.
