Vanguard omnibus accident (2 of 10)

Ten persons died as a result of the Vanguard omnibus accident and the bodies were returned to their relatives in Orpington and St Mary Cray.
This is a similar photograph to picture #1120.
Vast crowds turned out for the funerals and the cortege pictured above included several horse-drawn hearses, flanked by dozens of mourners including several members of the fire brigade.
The Large Version shows a close up.
Mrs Ena Tulley (née Anscombe) wrote of her memories of the accident and a transcription can be seen by selecting Open Document.
Two local ladies sacrificed their petticoats to provide emergency bandages for the injured. Mrs Penelope Boyd was the wife of the vicar of Slaugham, Rev. Arthur Hamilton Boyd, who served in the Parish from 1901 to 1929. Mrs Fanny Hermon lived at Staplefield Place.
