40th Anniversary of VE Day dance (1 of 2)

The Staplefield village hall was the venue chosen by the Handcross and District branch of the British Legion for a celebratory dance on the 40th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day held on 11th May 1985.
The photograph shows Jan Phillips, an evacuee with her teddy bear as company, and Roger Ray, an American high-ranking officer, I think!
The Large Version shows a newspaper cutting of the event.
As a ruse to confuse any enemy spies, Roger Ray, Chairman of the Parish Council, and local policeman, David Pearce, adopted personae from the TV series, The Dukes of Hazard. Hence the Council Chairman became Boss Hogg, and the policeman became the local Sheriff. People may scoff at the subterfuge but, so far as I am aware, no Nazi agents managed to infiltrate the upper echelons of village command.
I am grateful to David Pearce for supplying confidential correspondence previously withheld from public gaze under the 30-year official secrecy rule.
