The arrival of Mrs. Ford as head teacher was the equivalent of Mary Poppins. School became such fun!
Horrid plain and stained wooden dip-pens were replaced by bright primary-coloured lacquer ones with italic nibs. Exercise books disappeared as we made our own folders, allowing for artwork.
The radio became a study tool, accompanied by handsome booklets from the BBC. "Singing Together" with William Appleby on Monday mornings after the break.
We ventured beyond the school walls: nature walks to Slaugham ponds, shinty, rounders and cricket in the field next door, to the copse opposite for story-time or play-reading. In the summer we would lunch al fresco in the playground.
