Staff of Ashfold, Handcross (2 of 2)The staff of Ashfold house in Horsham Road, Handcross pose in front of an impressive Austin Sixteen. The plate "Austin Six" on the radiator grill indicated that it had the new six-cylinder engine to distinguish itself from the earlier models with smaller engines.
From the left, they are: Mr Styles (butler), Unknown, Mrs Ball (cook), James "Will" Brown (chauffeur and my grandfather), Unknown, Miss Waites (lady's maid).
I assume this photo was taken outside the main house at Ashfold.

Select Open Document to view a newspaper cutting from the Mid Sussex Times of 22nd August 1933 kindly submitted by Linda Knight.
It describes the funeral of Sydney Francis Izard who worked as an agricultural worker on the Ashfold estate for 55 years. The cutting gives his forst name as Sidney but I think that is incorrect as all other official documents use what must be his correct name of Sydney.
He was born in Slaugham in 1862 and, according to the 1871 census, lived in an un-named cottage close to The Rectory and Brook Cottage. During his adult life he lived with his sister Annie who was a year older. Both were unmarried. Sydney died in 1933, aged 71, after spending the final two years of his life in Cuckfield Institution, which replaced many local workhouses which had been closed down.
In the 1939 waetime register, Annie, aged 75, was a resident at the same institution and described as a laundry woman.
