Bridge over the A23 at Handcross

Another photograph of the building of the bridge at Handcross has turned up. More photographs of this project can be found at picture #1301, picture #1302, picture #1303 and picture #1304.
Part of the soil supporting the partially-completed bridge has been removed to allow the supporting central pillars to be constructed.
Not having any personal experience in such matters I cannot guess the purpose of the structure on stilts. However, I know for certain that I would not climb the 34-rung ladder to reach the top!

If i remember rightly it was pert of a screening plant, designed to sort different sized rocks which were used for different purposes in the construction of the bridge and roadway.
