High Street, Handcross

This is a very early photograph of the High Street in Handcross with only a couple of horse-drawn vehicles in sight. The pony and trap is parked outside Roberts House, with the adjacent Red Lion stables covered with posters. The stables were demolished once the requirement for stabling diminished with the coming of motorised transport
The Document link shows a page from the catalogue of the auction sale of the Handcross Park Estate on 10th July 1873 when Wind Hills cottages, shop, school room, and six small fields were sold. The road frontage of the whole 11 acres ran from the Cow Wood footpath to Chodds farmhouse just visible beyond the Scotts Pines. The buildings sold are those on the right of the above picture, and similarly shown on picture #92.
